Escape Hatch 'Carbon Copy' 2017
C-20 / Lo-Fi Ferro Cassette / NR Off / Falt 3
Some thoughts: In my opinion 'Carbon Copy' is best described by the german word 'kurzweilig' which could translate into entertaining, amusing, diverting and even funny and which is not at all something i want to say about a musical work like this one. So we are again lost in translation: From a personal meaning towards a more general meaning of a single word. A quick web search brings to light that Escape Hatch is an ambient artist who released music which in no way can be 'entertaining, amusing, diverting and even funny'.
So why can't i get the word 'kurzweilig' out of my head while listening to this tape (all copies dubbed in real time at my desk and diffused through the house for days and hours)? I think it is it's change of structures, the brutalist poetry, these strange hovering sounds, a stereo effect that comes into the mixture for a single note, the small tonal gestures and au contraire the orchestral qualities hidden behind the tape-hiss.
Each listening left me just with that word and maybe a spontaneus: 'This is a great tape!' with no one to listen to me except for my cat. So i turned the catridge and started dubbing the next side listening to a great example of how to be 'entertaining, amusing, diverting and even funny' and concurrently unable to explain what this would even mean. And isn’t this what a lot of poetry and for sure sound-poetry is about: filling existing spaces with scattered new relations and not just namable ideas? It is a great tape!
